My Food Pyramid Experience

Yesterday, I briefly talked about the new grocer in town- Food Pyramid. While my first experience was odd, but not necessarily bad, I think I should give it an good try before I blacklist it.

So here is what happened...

I, like usual, was running late for work and hadn't eaten breakfast. Instead of going into Starbucks I decided I'd go into Food Pyramid and get a muffin from the bakery. The Albertson's that used to be there had the best bakery of all the stores (Albertson's that is) in town. Hands down.

I walked in and over to the bakery. Picked out my muffin and headed to the Frappacino cooler. Whether or not you are at a Starbucks, a girl's gotta have her coffee. I grabbed my caramel frappacino and headed to the checkout.

My norm is to go through self-checkout. They truly are the best thing since sliced bread. Especially for people who prefer not to talk to strangers in the morning. Like me. BUT, they were closed.

I looked around. All the other checkouts we empty and had their lights off. I stood there looking for an employee and caught the eye of another shopper. She turned back and was speaking to a woman employee. The employee, who seemed to be a little irritated that someone was ready to pay for their items, walked over to a register.

Clearly, the other shopper had asked her to come over and I gestured her to go ahead of me. Contrary to popular opinion, I do have a nice bone. But just one.

The employee stopped her. It was so bizarre. She stuck out her hand like she were stopping traffic and said, "No, we are going to let her go first." And she pointed to me. What? I had no problem waiting. The other shopper only had a few items in her basket. The only difference was the other shopper was African American. I am obviously not.

Surely she did not choose me to go first because of the color of my skin. And I truly do not know. She could have been having a bad day or been mad that Albertson's moved and she was now an employee of a new company?! Who knows. But it didn't feel right to me. I felt awkward and horrible because I am NOT that kind of person. At all.

So, I'm going to give Food Pyramid another try. Only next time I'll shop at the one by my house.

I'm not so thrilled with Food Pyramid either - though I can't live far from you because SuperTarget is right up the street from me.

Going to FP soon though because they have all-natural ground round for $3/pound.
