This summer our very best neighbors moved to Florida. We still talk frequently and are planning on getting together when we are in Florida next month.
When they moved, they rented their house to friends who also said they would keep their dog, Susie. Their inside dog. They had their own dog and they would be doggie pals forever.
Amy called me a few weeks ago to talk and Susie was brought up. Someone had driven by their old house and told her Susie was always outside. Which is true.
Lately that statement is the most often true at night. And usually right smack dab in the middle of it. Last week the two dogs were out at 3:00am. Barking. Barking. And NOT. STOPPING. At 5:00am I finally just got out of bed. Fighting the urge to sleep was pointless.
The next few nights it continued but earlier in the night around 9:30 or so. The dogs would bark. And bark. And bark. Noticing a trend?
So last night Brian and I were watching a movie in the living room. About 10:00pm the dogs were out barking. We turned up the tv and did our best to drown them out. Movie was over. Dogs are still barking. And barking. Without a pause or moment to catch their doggie breath.
It went on and on and on. Then we heard what I was positive was a gun shot. Brian confirmed it was indeed a gun and I trusted him. As a Iraq veteran and Marine he knows the sound of a gun when he hears it.
I finally called the non-emergency police number to file a complaint. Officer Lisa was niceand asked if I knew the address of the dogs which I gave her. Then, within seconds, there was a pound at our door. Not a knock. A POUND. Brian answered the door and found an officer called out already to find the dogs.
He quickly told them they were next door. The first call they received said the dogs were a few houses done and he started with ours. We don't even have a dog anymore. Which is another story.
We thanked him for checking into it and also the officer still on the phone then went to bed.
To lay there. And listen to dogs. BARK. Until 12:45AM.
And all I could think about was my alarm going off at 5:00AM and how much a trip to Starbucks would be needed.

I hate nights like those. Luckily none of our neighbors have pets. Although, it is a little worrisome when people don't have any kinds of animals.
