Dear Darla

Ethan has recently become a fan of the Little Rascals. You know the one with the kid from the Welch's commercials? That one. It also happens to be one that Brian and I love no matter how many times we've seen it.

It wouldn't be odd to hear one of us say to the other, "Dear Darla, I hate your stinkin' guts!"

(In a complete iloveyou sort of way.)

Last night in the car we started talking about Little Rascals. Brian said, "Dear Darla..."

Ethan jumped in, "Dear Darla, I hate your stinkin' butt!"

Oh. I love that kid.

He Likes Captain Hook Just As Much As His Aunt Lacey Did!

Last night Ethan had a bad dream. Well, by the crying, I assumed it was a bad dream.

He kept saying, "NO! NO!"

As I reached over to comfort him he cried, "NO! I don't wanna grow up!"

I think he's seen Peter Pan one too many times this week.

Maybe.

Dancing Queen- That's Me!

Last Friday we were at my parent's house before the game. Lacey was keeping Ethan and Brian and I were saying good-bye to him.

As always he asked where I was going. I told him I was going to see "the girls" (Highsteppers) at the football game.

"The girls are gonna dance Mom?"

"Yes," I said. "The girls are going to dance."

He turned to Lacey with a big proud smile on his face (or- that's how I saw it) and said, "My mom is a dancer. Her a GOOD dancer!"

Then he just grinned at me. Almost saying, right Mom?

It was so sweet. I beamed. It's one thing to have your mom and dad say they are proud of you. Or your husband. Or friends. But when a 3 year-old little boy is proud of his mama, there is no other feeling.

I'm sure it won't last. I won't always be a good dancer in his eyes. I'm sure by the time he's my age he'll sit in the living room and mock me like my sisters and I mock my dad. Hopefully I have a while before that sets in.

Age 3: The Year of Never Ending Questions

On the day Ethan turned two the Terrible Two's made their appearance known. Now that he's 3 it's 20 Questions!

The following is just an example.

(In the car last night after leaving our house. Aunt Lacey had been with us and left at the same time)

E: Where's Lacey?

Me: In the red car in front of us.

Why is her in front of us?

Because she left the house first.

Why did her leave the house first?

Because she was parked behind us.

Where is her going?

To Mimi's house with us.

Why are we going to Mimi's?

To take her soup.

Why are we taking her soup?

Because she doesn't feel good.

Why her not feel good?

Because her feelings are hurt.

Why her feeling are hurt?

Well, somebody said something to her that wasn't very nice.

WHO SAID THAT?

(Insert Name)

Why he say that?

Well, I don't know.

Where's Uncle Mitch?

Playing golf.

Why is Uncle Mitch playing golf?

Because he likes it. It's fun.

Why is golf fun?

Because golf is a sport and sports are fun.

Why is golf a sport?

Because God made golf a sport.

Why did God make it a sport?

Because God made everything.

Why did Good make everything?

Because He's God.

Oh.

He Paused.

I get it!

Talk about 20 Questions..give or take a few. I just laughed. And whether or not you find it as funny as we did I needed to remember this one.

Learning to Pray

Talk around our house the last few days all seems to be about Ethan's birthday. He turns three Sunday or as he says "FREE".

Generally he is very excited about his birthday but every now and then he decides a birthday is not for him. Like this morning.

We were sitting on the couch and I began talking about his birthday. I told him in two days he'll be 3 years old!

E- "I DON'T WANNA BE FREE!"

The whining began.

E- "Why do I have to be free, Mom?"

Me- "Well, everyone has a birthday because that's how God made us. God wants you to be three."

E- "TELL, GOD!"

Me- "Tell God what?

E- "Tell God I don't wanna be free!"

Unfortunately he doesn't understand yet that no matter his prayer, he'll still be three. But I love that he believes God can change it and is learning to pray about things.

I Heart Him...A Lot.

I haven't been feeling very well lately. Last night I was on the couch, huddled in my blanket, looking miserable.

Ethan hugged me and smiled. I asked him to pray for Mommy not knowing what he would do.

He stopped.

Looked straight up to the sky and said, "God. Please help my mommy not be sick. Amen."

Of course then I started bawling and the pure sweetness sitting in front of me.

I am so thankful for my sweet angel boy!

Table Talk

Ethan has had an ear infection and been on antibiotics. With these particular antibiotics he always seems to become constipated. It's sad really.

The other night at dinner Brian poured him a glass of apple juice. He set the glass down and told Ethan to drink his juice.

Ethan said, "It will help me poop? Mama, this juice helps me poop!"

I looked at Brian puzzled. "What? It's true."

Looks like I'll have years of inappropriate table talk ahead of me.

Boys.

Sunny Days Sweeping the Clouds Away

Ethan talks to all things as though they are living, breathing and have feelings. For example, the other day we were eating around the table. The green beans began to crowd the other items on the plate. Ethan firmly told the green beans, "SCOOT BACK!" He then moved them because, clearly, they were not moving fast enough.

Saturday on the way home from church he began talking to the rain. Because today is a rainy, cloudy, gloomy day it reminded me.

(It's also a little chilly which makes everything better. And by chilly I mean not 99 degrees. Cloudy, rainy, gloomy and humid are just not good together. I can do rain with a breeze. And a pot of soup.)

(With the slightest change in temperature my first thought is to make some sort of soup for dinner. Without fail. Tonight I opted to make bean soup with rice and a side of cornbread. I can hardly wait until dinner time. I started the beans about 6:30 this morning.)

You are welcome to join us.

(But call me so I can pick up the laundry off the chair in the living room)

Back to my story. We were in the car driving home and it began to sprinkle. From the rear of car I heard:

"Hey rain, just stop. Just stop raining rain. Okay? I just need it to be a sunny days. So go away rain."

It rained a little harder.

"Hey! I said go away! I JUST NEED A SUNNY DAY!"

Then we drove out of the rain so as far as Ethan is concerned...the clouds listened.

SAY SORRY!

Funny Phrases by Ethan

"Say sorry Mom!"

He says this is a very stern voice and continues to say it until I say sorry. I keep telling him I don't know what I did or why I'm sorry. In fact, our conversation last weekend went like this:

(as we are cleaning up Ethan's toys)
Ethan: Say sorry mom!
Me: What did I do?
Ethan: SAY SORRY!
Me: NO! I didn't do anything.
Ethan: Say sorry mom!
Brian: Lauren, don't argue with him. Just say sorry.
Me: Fine. I'm sorry Ethan.
Ethan: Thank you mommy. I wuv you.

Long Live the Queen!

Brian's mom is in town and we've been visiting with her and her mother who lives in town. The other night Ethan went into Grandma Clow's kitchen and retrieved a Diet Dr. Pepper from the refridgerator. I told him to put it back.

To which he replied, "I can't put it back!"

We continued in this conversation once or twice more then I started to count.

1.

He didn't move.

2.

I stood up from the couch.

Ethan ran to the kitchen.

I followed him to make sure he actually put it away. He shut the door and I firmly said, "Do NOT get out another Dr. Pepper. Do you understand?"

I heard him mumble something that sounded like, "Yes, er ma m"

Thinking he said yes ma'am but not positive I asked, "What did you say?"

He looked at me straight in the face, clear as day and said, "YES! YOUR MAJESTY!"

Car conversations

This morning in the car:

Me: In three days we are going on an airplane!

Ethan: Goin Was Begas!

Me: Yes, we are.

Ethan: Gonna see the monsters!

Me: What? What monsters?

Ethan: The monsters!

Me: What is the monster's name?

Ethan: Michael

Me: Michael?

Ethan: Yeah, Michael and Sully.

OH! He's talking about Monsters, Inc. Why he thinks we are going to see Mike and Sully? No clue. BUT. I can assure you, regardless of what your mother-in-law looks like, my mother-in-law does in fact have 2 eyes. Also, she is completely fur free.
